Racing Tips and Trends for December/January
Posted on December 15th, 2011 in Uncategorized
We are heading into a very busy time for racing with the King George and Welsh National just around the corner as well as some excellent racing in Ireland over Christmas.
I will be opening a Welsh National thread up in the next couple of days but in the meantime here is a general thread for all your thoughts for the December and January period.
We look forward to hearing your ideas and tips

Brian Ellison is highlighting what a poor trainer Nick Gifford is and how poor he is at placement with the nascent form of Dusky Bob.
He used to run in the colours of an old favourite Roselier in Ballyvaddy and his pedigree suggests that he will stay four miles let alone three.
Now with a decent trainer I hope he runs well today and perhaps even takes in the NH Chase a bit later on in the season.

Morning all
Main focus is today’s Ascot races, but will follow Pablo on reindeer dippin And in the 245 will g for canning ton brook or cape tribulation
Ascot
155 Giorgio quercus 3.2/1 although Gilbarry with the McCoy factor around 10/1 could be interesting
230 Is one of Those Frankel races, can you look beyond big bucks? On form defiantly not the only but is the right handed track which may not suit big bucks and may throw in a surprise . So small bets for me on restless Harry and sparky may at around 28/1
305 reve de sivola and outsider neptune collonges, do quite like the Minack but too short for a big field.
335 Sailers warn looks a good 10.5/1 shot, good Irish raider, been running well, has McCoy on board. Will also back Marsh Warbler as 16/1 and well weighted compared to Brampour when being beaten by Grandouet
Good luck today everyone

Hey NP
Great to see you (or online version of being in touch) again
Looking forward to The Grand National 2012
Started catching up on the posts (lovely reading – relishing getting through them with a festive drinky poo in one hand when I get real time off very shortly) since my time out grazing in the field but am back now in training and will be red red hot hot once again!!
Some really nice posts have been put up…really really well done and thanks to the Team

Anyone else tipping this afternoon?

Christmas Ascot race – what on Christmas day?
Your cabinet sounds fine indeed Sir NP
#10
December 17th, 2011 14:26
Thanks Showlad, not so sure it will be as full by the end of Christmas!
A nice contrast from some heavy malbec’s for steak, some of Italy’s finest sangoinese grapes, reasonably priced concha toro trio from Chile and some heavy rioja for roasts. All this talk of wine is making me thirsty so glass no 1 poured , it is Christmas after all!
Lancetto & passato in the 125 for me

December 18th, 2011 22:59
60 runners declared for Welsh national to be run on December 27 (hopefully.
) however Neptune College is a doubtful runner so weight might go up by at least 3 pounds by my reckoning.
#28
December 18th, 2011 23:04
Sorry that’s Neptune Collonges.
#29
December 19th, 2011 08:04
Showlad if you read the top of this thread, Admin says he’ll be opening up. separate threads for Welsh National & King George in a few days.

has anyone done any novity bets on paddy power before, the reason why i ask is because i have done inbetweeners on there a few weeks ago for christmas no 1 dvd, its no.1 in the chart at tesco the charts are up today and bet is still saying pending. im getting anxious cause i had a large bet at 6/1 , ive also done an trixie with inbetweeners @6/1, military wifes christmas no.1 @13/8 and mark cavindish bbc sports personality of the year 11/8 and all are looking good at the moment .fingers crossed .. ps well done showlad on all your tips yesterday , its good to see you back
#31
December 19th, 2011 14:22
Any novity bets like number 1 at Christmas might be next week as Christmas day is on Sunday this year, but they should tell you the conditions of the bet. Good luck with it.

December 19th, 2011 22:48
Nice to see your first win Showlad (i was wondering where you got too and found you here)- can’t wait for your 1-6 GN (so many of the fancied runners have problems with key stats so far). Lets hope we can pick up a few pennies on the WN!!- going to check out those GG’s…Giles Cross and Galaxy Rock.
Main stats for Welsh National anyone??
#34
December 21st, 2011 01:44
Hey stablemate Systemsman
Yes let’s get our Top 6 votes in for the Grand National ready for the first vote which will close on the last day of this year
Thread as usual Admin please?
Welsh National thread too Admin – there’s only 1 week left to the race and no thread up
On the second day of Christmas Admin gave to me…a thread for the Top 6 Tipsters League and a thread for the Welsh National…
Actually fits phonetically if you sing it
#35
December 21st, 2011 21:24
Showlad my friend see note 39 from me on the “Grand National 2012: Countdown To April!” thred, re dates for GN Top six round 1.
#36
December 21st, 2011 23:19
Hi Systemsman my stablemate;)
The Jan 3rd close last year was to allow for the Welsh National to be taken into account which was rescheduled for that day. So, if all happy, we’ll revert to the original Dec 31st deadline.
:)
Gives us to the end of this year, as is our tradition, for each of us to call our first Top 6 vote
Hopefully Admin will have a dedicated thread for our first votes to go on (I’ll paste over those who have already voted)…Admin, hello…Admin lol

Synchronised likely to go to Lexus!!

#39

Just want to say what a great bunch you all are
MERRY CHRISTMAS and All the Best for 2012 to all
Admin – thanks and Seasons Greetings too

#41
December 22nd, 2011 01:37
Showlad while I’ve yet to get to work on the Welsh national, I can tell you that several experts from my racing paper The Weekender fancies Giles Cross. Looks like Darren our administrator has forgotten to put up a dedicated thread for Welsh national & King George so going to make a start on this thread very soon.
In the meantime merry Christmas
#42
December 22nd, 2011 15:37
Ah ha ASM! just what I was saying on GN thread
Thanks for the posting Showlad, glad to see someone has started us off. I backed Giles Cross in the Southern National, hoorah! first of a few big wins for me …Hennessey, becher chase…
all those precious winners turning up for the welsh! all with a fair chance, but theres lots more to like and I couldn’t discount The Fitz either
or apparently Le Beau Bai whose bounce back last time somewhat suprised me. A real christmas pickle!
#43
December 22nd, 2011 15:49
Giles Cross well fancied but worryingly few finishing gears. Didn’t beat much in the Southern Nat and was a leggless finish there. If however his nemesis Synchronised really is heading for the Lexus? it is far more tempting.
Cappa Bleu anyone?
Galaxy Rock and Any Currency are interesting.
As for Ballyfitz will he get in? he has to be my best e/w value bet and its traditional!

December 22nd, 2011 18:10
Hi all
KJ may your lucky run continue
ASM and KJ re Giles: indeed KJ more of a ‘pummeler’ from the front and wearing field down than a Don’t Push It 5th gear style horse. Easy winner last year bar Synchro. Nice prep already and still weighted well. That’s why I posted up the 8/1 announcement last night – super ew value – which has gone now (6s and 7s).
Le Beau and Bally super ew value – with the former a real threat.
18 get into the Welsh and they are respectively Le Beau (already in) at 17th and Bally at 20/21st) should have a great chance of getting in.
How long we been going now on here KJ? Reckon I’ve been here coming on here since 2007…

hi team i hope your all nearly done for crimbo and having some festive spirit, i hope some off you got on cavendish early enough best price 2/5 at the moment, and he is polling some of the online polls at 53% at the moment. i hope someone did my forecast cavendish, farah @5/1 he is now best price 11/4 and cavendish, donald @ 40/1 now best price 15/2, clark could be a fly in the ointment for me but i have not done him, i think luke donald has done much more than him this year and being english he should get more of the votes as it is in this country and the irish vote will be split between clark and mcilroy. my heart tells me cavendish , farah but my wallet would like cavendish, donald but just a cavendish win i will be very happy , i will be on later during the show if i hear any of the later polls.

Going to do a dosage table for Welsh national, plus how does everybody feel about a mini vote for Welsh national.
Dosage is about a horse’s stamina against it’s speed.
How do we find this out?
We look for special sires, namely Chef De race or to put it in Ben’s terms Master Of The Breed. We go back 4 generations with each generation having half the points of the generation in front of it. So 1st generation has 16 points, 2nd generation has 8 points each, 3rd generation has 4 points each and finally the 4th generation has 2 points each. These points only count if the sire is one of these special sires otherwise the points is zero.
These points can be from any of these 5 traits, brilliant, intermediate, classic, solid and professional. Brilliant and intermediate belong to the speed side of the equation while solid and professional belong to the stamina side. Classic is split equally between the two.
These five figures make the other three. Dosage Profile (DP ) is simply adding the five figures together. It is always even and lies between zero and 64 the higher the figure the classier the horse (or at least in theory. )
Dosage Index (DI ) is simply dividing the speed half of the equation (including half the classic figures ) by the stamina figures (including the other half of the classic figures ). The DI is always written to 2 decimal places, the only exception is infinity. A DI of 1.00 is a perfect balance while below shows more stamina and above more speed.
The third figure is the centre of distribution ( CD ) and shows how far a horse should get. To work out the CD you must double the brilliant points and add the intermediate points this is the speed side of the equation while the stamina side of the equation we double the professional points and add the solid. We then take away the stamina points from the speed points. We then divide the answer by the DP and this leaves us with a figure between -2.00 to 2.00 (the only exception is infinity ). A figure of 0.00 is a perfect balance while a negative figure shows a liking for long distances while a positive figure for shorter distance. The CD like the DI is always written to 2 decimal places.
#49
December 23rd, 2011 01:22
Now I’ve explained the basics on dosage, I’ll explain my table. First I take the first fifteen (15) separate winners who are dosage strong. Ben used to say 6 or less is dosage weak, but after much thought I decided to include those on 8 as well. That means the sample will be those on 10 or higher.
I take the average of the DI and CD and then the average of those above and below the original average. These figures along with the boundary of the sample form my markers.
Using my markers I then set up nine categories instead of the original seven like last year.
The nine categories are
Extremely positive
Positive
Slightly Positive
Above Average
Average
Below Average
Slightly Negative
Negative
Extremely Negative.
The actual sample and table will follow as soon as I’ve time to sort them out!

Everyone,
We have a dedicated Welsh National thread now – apologies for the delay. I’ve also added a voting page as requested – could one of the regulars, possibly Showlad as he was so vociferous in his requests (only kidding!), add a blurb about what is required from the voting page so any new users can join in without any confusion. Thank you.
I’m not really sure we need a dedicated King George thread as the idea of race threads is that they predominantly act as a preliminary to the Grand National itself and it looks unlikely that any of the Kempton field will end up in the National. However, if a few of you could underline that you think a King George thread would be useful despite the relatively short space of time before the race then I will add one. If we can get three or four different people saying today (23rd of December) that they think this would be useful then I will add.
I hope you all have an enjoyable (and profitable!) festive season and thanks as always for all your excellent posts
Darren

Nice xmas selections sling-shot01 – i’am sure a few will win.
King George – Long Run should win provided he makes no mistakes – if he does its much more open (I love MM but think the pace against LR and KS will be too fast over those last 2f [against others he could win]).
#57
December 23rd, 2011 23:45
Just looking at king George it’s probably the most robust dosage race of the year, so will be interesting to see if trends continue. As the horses trying 3 miles for first time (master minded, captain Chris and Somersby) make interesting reading. Looking at previous winners (I accept there have been multiple winners), master minded is the least likely winner closely followed by captain Chris, however Somersbys dosage profile is excellent so on paper he has a great chance of getting the trip (question is he good enough). The stats say that u need a lot of stamina to win king George and as I’ve backed Somersby at 50/1 each way I’m hoping they hold up for another year and he can sneak into a place or dare I dream better!! Happy Xmas to all the team another excellent year and fingers crossed we get a big result come april

King George:
KAUTO was too good to ignore when I got on @ 4/1 earlier in the week. Crazy ew value too was and still is NACARAT @66/1 with Paddy Power. In a race where many will try to play and excel at an unfamiliar game and distance Nacarat will enjoy the going and could just sneak a place

Merry Christmas everyone, at this time of night I bet a few of us are quite merry.
Hope you have all had a fantastic day. Kempton tomorrow and I am swaying towards Master Minded as a bit of a wildcard and at 7/1 seems good value.
Showlad Although I don’t feel Nacrat front running style will prevail he may sneak a place if a few don’t finish.
Catch up with you all tomorrow and hope not too many sore heads about!

Two each way against the field in the Paddy Power for me,
LEANNE has shown her liking for this race previously so expect her to give a good run for my money and SOME TARGET to go close to bolster his handicap mark and get in for Aintree.
I like AS DER FER and LE BEAU BAI to run well at Chepstow. Conditions should suit both these French breds.
#76
December 27th, 2011 13:52
WELSH NATIONAL
Win bets for me on:
Giles Cross
Galaxy Rock
Main e/w bet:
Any currency
Speculative e/w bet:
Indifference Curve
Watching that first race, the ground didn’t actually look that testing for Chepstow standards and they finished with quite a flourish. Therefore, despite any official going description, I have just about crossed Le Beau Bai off my list as don’t think it will be quite testing enough for him
PADDY POWER
Some Target (20/1)
Western Charmer (40/1)

Wonderful run by SCOTSIRISH. This fella is getting better even at this late stage in his career.
Glad I’ve taken some rather fancy prices for only small outlay. Worth a £10 of anyone’s money for Aintree.

Go on Synchronised!!!!! Definately one for April! And maybe the ground would’nt need to be so Heavy!!
#91
December 28th, 2011 15:53
According to JP it’s off to the Hennessey next!
#92
December 28th, 2011 16:09

#93
December 28th, 2011 16:11
Wot do people think synchronised will go up by for that?
#94
December 28th, 2011 16:20
blooming hell! go Syncronised,…. just back from ‘hols’ missed the race but managed to get on yesterday hoorah!
well done all winners! hope I can find a replay to watch.
but it’ll do hey.
Got some 75-1 for the national 2 weeks ago as noone took my late attempt at the magic 100-1
#95
December 28th, 2011 16:31
if he is 11.6 or less i will lump on could be top weight me thinks
#96
December 28th, 2011 16:50
Watched on atheraces hoorah! stamina in buckets! A weight carrying machine! so all is not lost if he is poorly treated because of this, competition was not the best was it?!
The fact that he is a little horse and can ‘corkscrew’ jump is more of a concern for Aintree, PLUS… what if Tony rides the equally deserving DPI?
I have had such a lucky autumn of beting on big races, with one bet only,.. wins
and at good odds, I can’t believe it, hope it can continue to our favourite race.

Didn’t win or see yesterdays welsh national tho
Only had one bet as couldn’t decide between several and did say if Le BB ran like his previous race again he could have them (syncronised diverting) but I couldn’t trust him to, so left it with Ballyfitz, who didn’t turn up
Le BB must have just not been right last yr physically, nice to see him comeback to form… poor Giles hey.
#97
December 28th, 2011 16:52
well done on your double slingy!
#98
December 28th, 2011 17:46
Well done all, family still here just back from lunch and oh yes missed the racing again today and the teams synchronised win, waved goodbye to the family for a while,
so is their any racing left to watch and winners for the team to pick?
Let’s hope so

December 28th, 2011 17:51
WD all on synchronised, what a fab double sling!!
#100
December 28th, 2011 18:09
cheers kj and jackie its been a very profitable christmas for me, big singles doubles.. although i did not have the winner in the welsh i had the second and doubled it up with synchronised i also doubled up the winner with synchronised i dont like to keep all my eggs in one basket so to speak so spread my bets , i was gutted yesterday but overjoyed today. im also waiting out on paddy power to pay me for christmas no.1 dvd , i had a bet on inbetweeners being no.1 @6/1 , i had a large bet. i did this in a trixie as well with military wifes and mark cavindish.
#101
December 28th, 2011 18:41
Very good work sling-shot!
#102
December 28th, 2011 18:43
I had 1 bet today and that was Cootehill. niice.
#103
December 28th, 2011 18:47
and i had the Paddy Power Chase winner yesterday at 11-1. not been a bad Xmas holiday at all.
#104
December 28th, 2011 18:49
theres no way Synchronised can win the national now. He will be in the mid 160s, it was going to be hard enough on 155.
They should go for the gold cup then punchestown grade 1.
#105

December 28th, 2011 18:43
I had 1 bet today and that was Cootehill. niice.
Well done but annoying for me as I had the one that yours touched off into 2nd!
#106
December 28th, 2011 19:19
Mike, the plan is already out for Sync and it is targeting the Gold Cup. So if he don’t go GN he can’t win ey. Agree topweight would be really hard. This plan will atleast avoid the expense of cloning Tony
Personally I don’t think Sync had much to beat there, it was a really, really easy bet to make and I would hope handicapper will judge proportionally.
See my little chum Treacle ran, finished 2nd at 20s,… phew, really could have missed out there.
#107
December 28th, 2011 19:52
Goodness! Dave ‘chisey’ Chisnall has beaten Phil ‘the power’ Taylor in the darts!
Think the potter should retire now, failing eyesight not good, I know chisey can do it but Phil has won this title since time in memorial, enjoy something else like some walking mate.
Chisey down to 9-1 to string the rest together, hmmmm.
#108
December 28th, 2011 21:09
Holy Moly when was the last time Ladbrokes went 10/1 the GN favourite before the end of the year??? That’s a pretty significant cut in odds!! 16/1 seems about right at this stage but Laddies clearly dodging the horse big style. If he turns up on the day and McCoy rides then he’ll surely go off in single figures despite reservations over the going.
#109
December 28th, 2011 21:54
Wud be interested to see how times measured up today to last year as Last Instalment and synchronised are obvious ones who its believed wud prefer the ground to be soft, I just wonder if the times back up the the assumption that the ground was good to yielding.
Im not taking anything away from the way the Synchronised pulvirized the opposition, in fact more to the contrary, as I’m hoping it backs up what visually looked like it could possibly propel him into 165-170 rating (I accept that this would make winning the grand national extremely difficult). But Ive also got a bit on him to win the gold cup as I think Kauto and Long run might be flattered by their ratings.
Unfortunately can’t get on RP website to check.
Well done to everyone on synchronised today sounds like a few of you have had a very nice touch.
Im at Doncaster tomorrow if anyone has anything they think could run well Id as always be grateful for any advice you have.

December 28th, 2011 21:56
*Correct ground was officially GOOD (GOOD/YIELDING)
#111
December 28th, 2011 22:35
Just done a few sectional times looking at the Last Instalment race and the Synchronised race and obviously these are done with a stop watch as accurately as I can, but the first obvious thing to note is that the novice 3m was completed from the first jump to the line in 5.58 where as the Lexus was a couple of seconds slower 6.00.
The most impressive part of the lexus seems to be where the race hots up from the second last ditch to the second last jump where the lexus was run a full 3 seconds faster than the novice race. This seems to be where Synchronised excelled with a burst of pace that appeared to brake the other runners.
I read James Pymans piece in the RP today where if memory serves me he said that Synchronised’s finish in the Welsh National was one the fastest he has ever recorded in the race.
As a number have said on this site it has become more important than ever to have that burst of speed at the end and it appears Synchronised posses exactly that.
Unfortunately i think his task of winning the National if they decide to go for it has just got about 8-10lbs harder now.

December 29th, 2011 00:07
Just back from travelling back from friends. Get in Synchro
Great weekend – Welsh 1-2 and Lexus win. So grateful.

December 29th, 2011 02:20
Night guys PS just watched the Lexus and ON GOOD GROUND!!!! Synchronised was AMAZING – gosh that accelaration after the last fence…
Defo head and shoulders for me above the rest of the cast of 2012 and with 29 days after the Gold Cup I, for one, won’t be ‘relying/hoping’ he won’t run – I have got him whilst 25/1 (Paddy Power) remains.
#115
December 29th, 2011 02:21
PPS let’s get everyone’s Top 6 votes on the Grand National votes thread by midnight 31st Dec

December 29th, 2011 12:50
Been watching ATR. Had D McCain on. Reckons Peddlers wasn’t himself other day and that goin right handed doesnt suit him. Also Kempton was too sharp for him. Will be different rematch in Arkle me thinks!
Ballabriggs to run in same race as last yr at Kelso but he MAY have a run before. Then straight to Aintree. So poss only one GN prep run next MARCH?! Similar to our old friend State Of Play’s prep.
#117
December 29th, 2011 15:14

Mike; we were at Leicester yesterday. Am I right in thinking that NTD has a good record there? It’s a smashing little track and I can’t wait to go back there again, although found it impossible to pick any winners.
#121
December 29th, 2011 22:02
hooray paddy power has finally paid out for christmas no1 dvd , not bad considering it was a christmas bet and my pay slip said 18th. i hope 2012 is as profitable as 2011, for myself and the rest of the team
#122
December 29th, 2011 23:15
Well done Slingy
Today’s tips based in the main on sentimental attachment to the 3 horses – not a good idea ha ha. But I suppose after all of our Team’s successes your Showlad is allowed to be a bit silly on the 29th December lol
#123
December 30th, 2011 14:11
Suburban Bay great value 10/1 in the 1.10 Taunton if Menorah mis-fires at chasing again.

OK moving away from our mega long shots to a final bet of the day – serious bet this time ha ha:
2.00 Haydock
CAMDEN GEORGE @9/2
WHINSTONE @27/2 should love going and it could just get him in mood for a right handed track.
#128
December 30th, 2011 16:33
Had fun with the minority I allocated off of the Ruff Diamond, Welsh and Lexus wins but now time to say what I aim to be saying a lot next year – ala Anne Robinson – with the majority of my winnings – ‘bank!!’ and so the Lion’s share of those wins is now put away not to be touched except for GN.
Looking forward to posting up my GN Top 6 by the stroke of midnight tomorrow
Have a great couple of days over this and tomorrow – THE LAST COUPLE OF DAYS OF 2011!!
#129
December 31st, 2011 00:39
I’ve got a runner tomorrow from my syndicate (million in mind partnership) in 3.40 Newbury, where Torphichen runs over hurdles,12/1 generally. The softer the ground the better and he certainly has an each way chance, hoping he gets in prize money, although looks like olofi will be hard to beat but fingers crossed he gets round safely and continues his good recent form
#130
December 31st, 2011 11:12
Morning all, good couple of days racing to tuck in and enjoy.
Thinking of giving cue card a go today at around 3/1 .
Good luck with your horse Billymag, will check in with some selections later
#131
December 31st, 2011 12:25
I’m going to take a punt with SUPREME TEAM in 3:00 at Uttoxter. The RP says he is unproven on heavy, which he is but I’m going to take the general view that most Supreme Leader’s do go on heavy ground and with 9-10 on his back I think it’s worth having a tenner e/w at 14′s.
#132
December 31st, 2011 13:30
Tom Scudamore really is a very poor jockey isn’t he? Absolutely no appreciation of pace.
#133
December 31st, 2011 15:11

good start to the day

Rey narcaro in the next 3.2/1
#140
December 31st, 2011 15:35
You probably would of got 1,000/1 on the winner after he nearly fell at the second last.
With the camera angles didn’t even see it coming either, most annoying especially on win only
#141
December 31st, 2011 15:35

#145
December 31st, 2011 15:53
Nothing for me in this one NP
#146
December 31st, 2011 16:02
Poor card really today’s, fungal bay should win but not odds for me so small bet on top of the range 6/1
Interesting one tonight , if anyone has been watching the darts, James wade looks large at evens to beat Adrian Lewis if he performs like he did in the last round
#147
December 31st, 2011 16:04
I had 1 bet today. Rey Nacarado. 2nd to Giles Cross last time. Not a strong field today. Won easy. Niice.
#148
December 31st, 2011 16:05

December 31st, 2011 16:51
Nice call billymag, thought torphichen was going to win it and had earlier looked at celestial halo but thought against backing it on very old form and nostalgia!
Got the place so can’t grumble too much!
#154
December 31st, 2011 16:51
Good old Celestial Halo, would not have picked him to win!
#155
December 31st, 2011 17:26
Heart breaking to see Torphichen run so well but find Celestial Halos bit of extra class tell in the end, unfortunately my rain dance didn’t quite make the ground soft enough, but a safe run and some good prize money. Next time.

All the best for the new year to everyone!
Off to work and won’t be seeing the racing till later
Few very quick selecions:
2.10 Chelt Havingotascoobydo
Lucky 15
2.55 exeter golden chieftan
2.35 catterick folk tune
2.30 southwell blue moon
1.15 mussel. bourne
Also single on marsh warbler. Too much weight???
All picked quickly, I do like GC, folk tune may not perform at the level, blue moon is hard to catch right as hold up horse and bourne may have too much weight this time, there you go i have talked myself out of them all!!
Good luck everyone today.
#160
January 1st, 2012 12:57
Main bet on Chel 1:35, Richards Sundance at 6′s. Was 2nd in this race last year off 136 now down to 129 and bookies well onto that.
2:10 Tentative bets on Calgary bay and Matuhi both EW. Since 2005 all winners ran in at least 10 chases and won 3+, Calgary won only two tho. Anyway gonna give him a chance to get back to winning ways today.
Happy 2012 and goodluck today.

#168
January 1st, 2012 14:54
good one speedy, I didn’t even know Mon Mome was running,….very confusing to turn on the tv and see him cross the line and hear ‘and mon mome second’ through him a few crumbs for the big one speedy
#169
January 1st, 2012 14:55
210 Reynard, hells bay and outsider the nightingale
#170
January 1st, 2012 14:56
I’m confused though that no bookies are offering any odds on him for the big one – maybe Venetia has ruled him out?
#171
January 1st, 2012 14:58
Your right Speedy didn’t have time to trade the bets out , it is a long run in , thought one would win but good to be reminded in racing you can’t count your
chickens to early!
well done to Mon Mome seemed to be staying on well.
#172
January 1st, 2012 15:00
You would of thught after that run you would give the national another go and he will turn up on the exchanges in the next week

Hi KJ
Re Synchro – his team say he may go for GC and he will get a GN entry too. Last year was last minute they decided not to go for Aintree because of ground (tho they know different this year).
You posted up ‘murmurings’ of his team and not running him with top GN weight – can you put link up for that – want to keep Synchro news accurate and not to get develop chinese whispers ha ha
Just hadn’t heard of any such murmurings re him and GN. Thanks in advance KJ
#178
January 1st, 2012 15:20

Hey Showlad
going to enjoy the sunny racing while its rainy and grey here. Sorry.
er…. I read things before the welsh nat and then after the lexus on sportinglife or racing post after hearing info from someone on here, welsh nat thread? sorry can’t remember who or find press links, you might be able to find somehow, but I not in fit state
There is evidence I saw printed, but these things are fluid. He’ll get a GN entry but not necessarily run with top weight,.. as in the welsh nat. Its going to be a wait n see challenge. See what the horse and Jonjo feel/say after his Gold Cup run.
#184
January 1st, 2012 15:44
On Tidal too NP
Think he could just turn in a New Year’s Day treat
Cover on the nose for Kayf.
#185
January 1st, 2012 15:47
Thanks KJ – ye all the fragments make the whole
They didn’t think Welsh fair on top weight in heavy.
Last year was up to the wire for the GN when they pulled him. Think tho that could be all different after the Lexus win
#186
January 1st, 2012 15:47

Well done team I was just watching Tidals behaviour.
never again, naughty annoying horse!
#191
January 1st, 2012 15:59
Too true KJ I got suckered into Tidal Bay for last yrs national, had visions of his finishing pace coming good at the last half mile. when in reality he is an unreliable but talented horse that is a quirky jumper and should be left alone.
Quiche and fiendish flame in the next

Lil quote for you KJ re Synchro after The Lexus:
“He had 11st 11lb in the Welsh National and it looked like being a slog,” Frank Berry, racing manager to JP McManus, said. “This gives us an idea of where we are going with him, and we can look at some of the good races. He gets the trip and he jumps, and he’ll get an entry in the Gold Cup. He had a hard enough race here and more than likely we will go straight there [and] he’ll also get an entry in the English Grand National.”

Agree Showlad, thats one of the quotes I read.
high five!
going to wait for all cards to align and 5th place pay out.
what a generous price Sync was in the lexus! he owes us nothing
got my golden ticket 75-1 to win for the GN, missed the 100s but its still quite shiney
will back him e/w close to the event, not any point right now… 10-1 ladbrokes! best PP 20-1
My guess is if he runs and with top weight more likely to be 3rd best or 5th

Another day another tendon injury….
JONCOL has been ruled out of the rest of the season after sustaining a tendon injury in the early stages of the Grade 1 Lexus Chase last month.
I thought he was unhappy… and disappointing along with a few others. Be interesting to see how this race measures up with a few more of the runners.

Morning all
Good to see a few tips going up today. Fingers crossed Mike N the streak continues, hold on Julio could be interesting but the odds may be a bit short to tempt me.
2 interesting ones are tanks for that and havingotscoobydo both were short prices the other week and fell, second time lucky may be worth a punt if they have learnt their jumping lessons? What does everyone else think?
Will study and post a few tips in a bit.
#227
January 7th, 2012 13:14
Saturday tip:
2.35 Sandown
Prospect wells (next best Colour Squadron)
(its hard to assess Captain Conan so keep an eye on the market, would need to be 3/1 or less to be a danger).
At the prices available now you could dutch PW(7/4) and CS(15/8) or back PS with a stakes saver on CS (my own prefererd option).
#228
January 7th, 2012 14:52
posted on GN thread,..
Gone for Any Currency in the 3.10 to bounce back, think he’s a bit slow and careful at jumps but if others jumping lets them down and its a bit soft he has a good chance of a win and he needs it OR wise/GN wise.
Hope to see Neptune given a break in the weights soon!
Exmoor Ranger needs to keep the jumping together, last run was good and I will be watching.
Wymott I like, though has been disappointing lately.
(Haven’t checked out those stepping up in class, just hoping for some known quantities, eek!)
Paddypower will return stake if the favourite beats your horse into second by the way
good luck with your bets all

Hi Magnifique ew
#233
January 7th, 2012 15:40
Can’t understand all the plaudits Lucy Alexander is receiving for what is in effect one decent ride. I leave her mounts well alone after seeing her ride Seeking Power twice over four miles.
What became patently obvious on those two occasions was that the horse clearly stayed four miles but unfortunately the jockey did not and she’s done nothing to enhance her unfathomably lofty reputation today.
You wait – when she rides her next winner we will have to endure yet more unworthy praise glossing over her usual inadequacies in the process.
#234
January 7th, 2012 15:42

And Showald’s tip for the 2.35 that he couldn’t remember (#234 “Looking for the horse who’s done really well in France, just over here in the UK and owners over today to see the race. Anyone help?”) and went on the wrong French sounding horse was of course CAPTAIN CONAN..Making his debut from France, woners over to see him today – I forgot name and went on the only French sounding horse ‘Magnifique Etoile’ in the race lol.
So a belated win today that won me nowt ha ha
#250
January 7th, 2012 19:32
Even when he went backwards, I knew Neptune Collonges would stay on and run his heart out. Must surely go for the National now? Another stem cell horse to win a National?
#251
January 7th, 2012 23:07
Future Grand National participant runs tomorrow in Lyreen Legend. I’ve latched on to this youngster as one to follow and can’t wait to see him go over 3 miles at some point soon.
He’s is by the stallion that I hope beyond hope will fill the void left by Roselier (along with Martaline).
Connections have of course already had a National runner, who was running well before coming down and old Falcon Du Coteau had a couple of spins for them over the big ones too.
I believe this horse was purchased with Aintree in mind, so let’s hope the journey reaches a happy conclusion in years to come.
#252

This novice chase throws up some interesting factors.
Whilst those with better hurdles records and chase experience head the betting, MINELLA BLISS (100/1) and RIF (33/1) offer great value in a race of 7 and 3 places.
MINELLA is making his chase debut but with a superb staying pedigree and a win over 26f (today is 25f) over this Hereford course already and a 7lb claimer the odds are ridiculosuly high.
Temperamental RIF has had some lovely hurdles and PTP 3m wins and if his temperament can be calmed again could make a mockery of odds of 33/1.

Does anyone know if a placepot has ever not been won? I assume it has happened before and a slightpossibility it could happen again at Taunton – 69.40 units left with 3 legs still to go! Pool is £95k
#258
January 9th, 2012 15:32
Even if the placepot stopped now, half way through, the dividend would be £1,004. I bet whoever still has tickets will be getting a bit nervous! Needless to say I am out
#259
January 9th, 2012 20:39
Evening all , expected to log on to find out one of the team had bet the 200/1 winner earlier , disappointed was sure someone here would have been on it .
Anyway something to make you smile ——
‘ I backed 3 horses at the weekend – Sunshine ,Moonlight and Good Times all lost , Blame it on the Bookie !! ‘ Lol JJF
#260
January 9th, 2012 21:42
Speedyseagull I think possibly when you could only put a placepot on at the track has one not come up. Not heard of one since every major bookmakers up and down the land has a terminal linked to the course.
JJF I have backed 100/1 winner but I doubt I would ever risk a 200/1 unless tipped by you of course.
#261
January 9th, 2012 22:47
Neither have I either A&SM. The favourites took control of last 3 races in the end and so placepot was won. £2.3k – a nice return for some people!
#262
January 9th, 2012 22:48
ASM even I dont have that much of a bad tipping sense , lol JJF
#263
January 9th, 2012 23:51
JJF it’s like I’d say. “You certainly won’t get it. If you don’t try.” However I think a just reason is needed and not just backing because of price alone. When I’d backed Iris De Balme 2008 winner (early price of 100/1) he had been noted by a tipster from my racing paper, so wasn’t totally backing blind.
#264
January 9th, 2012 23:55
Meant to say that IDB was 2008 Scottish national winner. Before that my biggest price winner was 50/1 Beech Road 1989 champion hurdle but again thought he was overpriced and a good each way shot. Just struck lucky that he got first place.
#265
January 10th, 2012 13:29
Who am I to crab the selection of the great Tom Segal but todays ante post selection for the Champion Hurdle, Oscars Well (admittedly each way), I just couldn’t have it on my mind, its crying out for 3 miles. It finished behind 2 likely runners in Irish Xmas Hurdle.
As I say Ill probably look daft come March and bow to the great man but I could see at least 5 possibly 6 finishing in front of him.
#266
January 10th, 2012 21:01
Very good point ASM #263 , not much point backing a 2/1 shot never mind a 200/1 shot unless there is some reason you think it will do well really .
#267
January 10th, 2012 21:53
Read on website of sporting life that somebody had £10 each way on that 200/1 who was a lucky winner
because the favorite fell two fences out.
When I had my 100/1 I had £2.50 each way and thought I did well picking up that win.
LUCKY FOR SOME, but wouldn’t you feel gutted if that’s you’re only winner in a Yankee.
#268
January 11th, 2012 23:28
2:15 Catterick tomorrow. 30f cls3 chase. Gone for Shaking Hands 7/2fav and Hennessy at 12′s. The latter down to OR 115(!!) now. Has certainly lost his way of late but an absolute cls act and by far the classiest horse in the field. a decent ew.
my biggest odds winner was Iris De Balme in the 2008 Scot Nat. 5′s ew at 100/1! I had him and Noir Et Vert! My tv nearly fell off the wall coz of all the stamping I was doing. My mum was round at the time and asked what I was doin?! I remenber he was 14lb (?) out the hcp.

Just posted up the new 2012 Eurovision Song Contest thred on the OLBG site in the Forum under TV @ Specials betting.
Hope many of you can join this years OLBG Team and I am sure showlad will be helping all the way. Going to take a more detached view this year (like GN) and not get too caught up with any one country unless they are really outstanding (as Germany was in 2010).
Lots of clues and information from 2011 to help us this year (we have the jury and public voting figures for 2011 for research).

One race one bet for me tomoz….Neptune Equester in the classic chase. Fits all the stats and looking forward to seeing him run a big race.
Trainer wants to go to Aintree this year, hes currently 40/1 for the GN. Really like his profile for the GN. Needs to win this I feel for that big chase win and get his OR up.
Heres what his trainer says about tomoz and GN….
Neptune in Classic frame
(UKPA) – 4 days ago
Grand National hope Neptune Equester could take his chance in the Betfred Classic Chase at Warwick on Saturday.
The nine-year-old showed stamina in abundance when winning an attritional contest at Haydock on his penultimate start and he was not disgraced when fifth in the Rowland Meyrick Chase at Wetherby on Boxing Day.
Trainer Brian Ellison is keen for his charge to increase his rating to enhance his chances of getting a run at Aintree and a good showing at Warwick would aid his cause.
“We’ve put him in there and we’ll have a look at the race and make a decision later in the week. There aren’t that many options for him,” said Ellison.
“He ran well enough at Wetherby. They just went too slow for him and all he does is stay. Ideally he could do with a bit further as well.
“He’s won over three and a half miles at Haydock, so you’d think the trip on Saturday would suit him well.
“He’s rated 136 at the moment and we’d like him to go up a bit as the race we really want to go for is the Grand National. We have the option of the Scottish National as well, but we’d like to go to Aintree.”
Neptune Equester is one of 17 entries for this weekend’s Grade Three handicap, with last year’s winner West End Rocker an absentee as expected.
David Pipe has Faasel, Shaking Hands and Sona Sasta all engaged, while other interesting contenders include potential top-weight Hey Big Spender, Key Cutter, Blazing Bailey and the 14-year-old Hello Bud.

January 14th, 2012 17:07
I think poor old Bud just couldn’t keep up in the end Showlad
Shame as he has been a good servant over the years, but he is at the grand old age of 14 so can’t be far off retirement.
the last few times I have seen him run he looks to be running a strong race then fades at the end.

thanks Jackie, I can see y’all but for the most part I can’t post myself, like I said tho no loss for you guys really as lady luck is not with me so far in 2012
#342
January 14th, 2012 17:50
Luck is normally temporary, so by the time the national comes round you could be On fire KJ. Good thing about this blog is someone is normally on form so helps when your not n form yourself, I have probably used up all my luck for a while today.
KJ why don’t you copy your post before you press submit , then if it does play up you don’t have to rewrite it and it may work the second time? Not a fix but may work and reduce frustration levels
#343
January 14th, 2012 17:59

I have saved one recently I may try post if it still makes sense

Just a late line to say I fancy Britain’s young Laura Robson to take the scalp of Jankovic tonight min the Ozzy Open.
5/1 cracking value.
#348
January 16th, 2012 11:57
Crikey what a depressing start for British tennis. Young Laura nearly put out world no.3 Sharapova at Wimbledon last year and this year is meant to be her big breakthrough. Thought playing the former world no.2 (now plummeted to 13) Jankovic could be her big chance – Laura takes only 2 games in defeat!!
ALL 5 BRITISH PLAYERS OUT AT FIRST HURDLE WITHOUT WINNING A SINGLE SET!!!!
Gosh…heavy is the burden on a certain young Andy Murray’s shoulders…

Well done Showlad , nice tips today
forgot to check in, bit busy with work.
Laura Robson did look like she would be the new British hope a few yrs back and like Murray not being trained in the uk she was full of promise. Heather Watson had looked like she would develop into a top 50 player too.
The lesson to be learned is always bet on English tennis players to flop!
Hopefully Murray will take on some of Ivan Lendl dogged determination and finally come good, don’t think I would bet on it though as likely to go out to Djorkovic in the semie’s. I would probably go Djorkefic or Nadal for the 7/1 value bet
#357
January 17th, 2012 01:06
Missed your tips Showlad
Well done though!
NP, I never trust Nadel these days, a;ways seems to pick up an injury, or mentions an injury, I was thinking of giving Murray a chance this time??
#358
January 18th, 2012 11:18
I know what you mean Jackie, he does put alott of strain on himself the way he plays and hasn’t been too reliable over the last few yrs, odds do reflect this and if he stays fit just think he offers better value then Murray who is I’n djorkovic half of the draw.
#359
January 18th, 2012 12:55
True NP.
#360
January 18th, 2012 13:37
Hi team does anyone know whats happened to Woolcombe folly, I noticed it didn’t get an entry for the Champ Chase so wondered if it was injured, as hasn’t run since Novemeber.
Part of me wonders whether Nicholls will be entering it in the Grand Annual to frame the weights for Ghizao (with possible claimer on)?
Cheers
p.s. Torphichen is entered up at Haydock on Saturday in the Champion Hurdle Trial, there are only 5 entries and loads of prize money, so although he should be outclassed he has a decent chance on the heavy ground. He has it all to do to turn the form round with Celestial halo but if it really is bottomless ground I can see him running him closer this time.
Torphichen also has an entry at Ascot the same day but that looks super competitive and ground only G/S so wouldn’t advise anyone to back him at either venue yet as King hasn’t decided which engagement he will take up yet. But if its Haydock 10/1 looks value to me, he’s fit and ready to battle

#373
January 19th, 2012 18:26
My reasons behind Papiss Cisse being top goal scorer are, this player come 2nd to Mario Gomez in the bundesliga 2010-2011 season scoring 22 goals. Breaking the record for the highest scoring african player in the bundesliga. Or put it another way, Mario Gomez is the bookies favourite for euro 2012 top goal scorer. International career for Senegal he’s played 13 scored 7 and Demba Ba has played 11 scored 3. Demba Ba is the 2nd favourite goal scorer at 5/1 and Papiss Cisse is 16/1 so the value has got to be with Cisse. Plus the fact Newcastle have just singed him to pair up with Demba Ba, the scouts obviously knows something. So get on while the value is still there.

Sling-shot – I am also on Senegal and Cisse! Although I think I may also have a dabble on Sow. The problem is that they will leave one out of Niang, Sow, Cisse and Ba on the bench but not sure which one. Ba may well finish top scorer but no value compared to others.
Cheeky e/w lucky 15 at Wolves tonight:

Take 2
Anyone who is superstitious don’t follow these tips as someone didn’t want them posted! Let’s hope I do don’t use up all my luck last week.
Haddock
110 our Mick is a reliable sort, good jumper , stamina and seems to be able to hold it in the closes stages so at just over 2/1 could be one to add more funds to today’s kitty
145 celestial halo had an unexpected win lto but at under evens, I prefer to go for the upset and torphichen looks good value at 9/1 is carrying more weight then when they met lto so will go for backup with marsh warbler at 4/1 also

Not having a bet, but a comment about Oscar Gogo caught my eye ‘he probably wants a track like Chepstow when it has been raining for a week’. However, he was also down as a 2 – 2 1/2 mile horse, so the Peter Marsh might be out of the question!

I like the look of Stow in the Hay 2:20. Has won on sft and at Hay on a mark of 131 in a Nv Hurdle…hes now on a mark of 120. Has won 24f so on paper must have a good shout.
Somersby EW finished bridesmaid (1L and shd) to MM twice on same OR as last yr.
According To Pete, fis a few trends and King Fontaine, like Hay and down to last Hay winning mark so both EW.
3:45 All For Free, fit trends. Zaynar also excellent chance and still well in on his Hurdles mark.
Had a scoop6 also.
Good luck all!

Whatever happens in the Peter Marsh, it’s ood to look at the pedigrees of some of the horses and see names like Roselier and Gunner B! I think the Roselier was the Reveley horse [could be wrong] so he’d love the ground. Really looking forward to the race.

Peter Marsh:
BOLD RANSOM ew @ 5/1
THE SAWYER ew @ 7/1
MOUNT OSCAR ew @ 32/1 (value pick)
Bold looking GREAT and Sawyer a real danger but could possibly puff out near finish. Accoriding to Pete could do this but feel he won’t handle his 7lbs up – if he does he has everything but we have to take a call don’t we
Mount Oscar is dark horse
Mon Mome could place but feel as said on here not quite long enough of a trip for him to excel. LOVE the horse though

sorry for anyone on senegal in the first half they played like a load of under nines they were rubbish, they didnt bring cisse on till the 67th minute, and his first touch of the ball he set up a goal. on the plus side my 50/1 side zambia as in post #371 won and looked quite good
#470
January 22nd, 2012 01:25
Well Sling-shot – not a good start for our boys! I still believe they will qualify. they would probably have to face Ivory Coast in round 2 but they have to beat the big boys at some point to collect the cash. I hate 4-3-3 formation and hope that they will revert to 4-4-2 with Cisse/Ba or Cisse/Sow up front. Thought Cisse did OK. He could fall behind in the goalscorer race if any IC or Ghana player notch a double in their opening game
My only other bet to win is Guinea e/w – purely speculative in case the big boys all falter. I have 3 other e/w top scorer bets, again specualative:
Hadji – Morocco – 40/1. Morocco should do Ok, hadji banged a hat-trick in recent friendly. Not bad odds
Bony – Ivory Coast – 50/1 – probably won’t play much but hoping he will get some time in the opener, impress, and then start later games instead of the terrible Kalou!
Alassane Bangoura – Guinea – 100/1. Highly specualtive. Young player who probably won’t start but their other forwards are poor and this kid has interested Real Madrid. There is a reason why he is 100/1 – I had to ask for odds to be added!
#471
January 22nd, 2012 12:44
Terible game! They couldn’t appear to finish any moves off apart from the one goal. Weren’t plsying as a team, imo either.
Had a couple of 50p scorecasts, so not too bad!!
Looking at Dance for Livy Tow. 1.10 ew today and Volcun Surprise in 1.40 Tow.
GL if you’re betting today

January 22nd, 2012 13:41
Yep, they were poor Jackie. Just hoping they are slow starters! They should beat Libya who were awful, with some carthorse up front. Equatorial Guinea were better, quite fluid in attack, but hopefully their naievity will tell against the big boys
Straws….Clutching…

January 22nd, 2012 14:24
the trouble with senegal last night , speedy seagull and jackie i think is they thought they could just turn up and win, they played very much like england did against germany in the world cup last time. their back four were to far up and they were trying to catch them on the offside trap but it clearly didnt work. on a plus side id say that was the best team in the group they played against in the group last night , the others will be easier and i cant see them playing any worse. prior to the tournament their defence has been really good, i think they were all looking for glory and goals.. dont throw you tickets away yet lol.

“PADDY POWER have installed Synchronised as their 9-4 favourite for the Hennessy Gold Cup at Leopardstown on February 12. Trained by Jonjo O’Neill, Synchronised landed his first Grade 1 in the Lexus Chase at the same track at the end of December when he finished 11 lengths clear of third-placed Quito De La Roque, who Paddy Power rate as their 100-30 second-favourite.
The Willie Mullins-trained Quel Esprit is a 4-1 chance, while Diamond Harry and RSA Chase second Jessies Dream are both available at 8-1.
Firm spokesman Paddy Power said: “When Synchronised arrived at Leopardstown last month for the Lexus, Irish eyes viewed him as more of a good, tough, quality staying handicapper. “After ruthlessly exposing the likes of Rubi Light and Quito De La Roque, he returns to reinforce claims to his position above any of our domestic three mile chasers.”
Now this looks a good oppportunity to take Synchronised on to me.
Nov 19th tan off OR147
Dec 28th ran off OR155
Now OR168
A step too far i think. In total its +21lbs since Nov 19TH
Surely Diamond Harry OR166 (4th in Betfair chase – his first run this season and winner of the Hennessy at Newbury 2010 of OR156). In total +10lbs since Nov 2010.
or another (Quito De La Roque? – but has been beaten by Synchronised) but not Synchronised, Views Team???
This looks a good race for the Team. Perhaps we should have scores for it nearer the time. A GN kitty builder.
Showlad my friend whats your view on this? I know you like Synchronised for the GN (if he runs)but is this a run too far in Feb on such a high OR?
#487
January 22nd, 2012 23:22
systemsman im gonna put my head on the block now, i think this horse in my eyes is one of the best horses since red rum, if only he could have protected his handicap mark which he hasnt i think he could have been good enough to get 2 grand nationals wins out of him f not very good runs.
but having said that i think he could still win it at 11/8 i think think its such a gutsy little horse and stamina is certainly not a problem with him. does anyone know of any odds on the gold cup/ grand national double for him, each way of course. ps does anybody know the exact dates for the weights in febuary

Tues 14th Feb Sling.
#489
January 23rd, 2012 12:09
sling-shot01 I agree he’s a good horse and had he ran in the GN off that lower mark of OR155 would have been in my top six for sure (even now i have not discounted him but the Gold Cup WILL take a lot out of him. If he has a light race in the GC and runs in the GN off OR160 to OR163 then who knows – but will he run??). But winning the Irish Hennessy of OR168 – he would have to be a a potential 2012 Gold Cup winner to do that in my opinion and i think he will not win that race for whats its worth. So i am happy to take him on as every horse has his limits and for me OR168 is that limit at this point (in the GN he may get in on less ofcourse).
#490
January 23rd, 2012 12:28
Irish Hennesssy Feb 12th
Pablo has rigtlty pointed out to me that this is not aa handicap race – I must learn not to rush things. But I still have Diamond Harry as the one to possiblily turn over Synchronised on the day. Still however need to see final card and going on the day to make a final decision so will come back on this nearer the day.

Stamina or Speed
In the better handicap chases over 3 miles at Doncaster you need the right mix of speed and stamina to get competitive.
It is interesting to note that 8 of the last 10 winners had won over the big race trip, yet 6 also had the necessary tatical speed to score over 2 1/2 miles. Stamina is always a factor in the finish of this race but Town Moor is a relatively flat course that provides one of the easiest 3 miles in the country. Therefore the ability to cruise through the race and remain in one’s comfort zone is every bit as important, as is the need to jump well.
Only 1 winner had fallen in any of their recent outings. Prominent runners also do well, as Doncaster is not a track for those who like to come from off the pace.
#522
January 26th, 2012 00:53
A weighty problem
Heavy weights have won
but recently no winner has carried more than 11-2(1998 Speaker Weatherill).
6 of the last 7 winners finished outside the frame last time out, but all bar 2 had finished 1st or 2nd in either their last 2 outings so was in decent form.
#523
January 26th, 2012 01:01
OR from past decade (2010 and 2001 was abandoned)
OR 114-125 38 ran, 3 won 6 placed.
OR 126-138 52 ran, 5 won 7 placed.
OR 139-150 21 ran, 0 won, 21 placed.

Thyestes:
Showlad’s merit picks:
SOME TARGET loads of promise but looks like he may need longer distance…
TINA KELLY LAD may need heavier ground and can he get the 24f? Still off a feather weight…
GLAM GERRY great feather weight again but also with 7lb claimer and looks like 24f could just fit the bill
JACK THE BUS sheer class and could be there at the end if 7lb rise doesn’t scupper him..
THE BISHOP LOONEY bags of poetntial and will like ground – if can master
TULLINTAIN really nice 2nd last time out beating the now NR fav for this race START ME UP into 3rd behind Sea Bass. Not sure wil get trip over chasing
3 against the field:
GLAM GERRY
JACK THE BUS
THE BISHOP LOONEY

Definately has the pick on form Wacky, ground heavy, so could throw some strange results up. Thanks for good luck wishes.
I went earlier this month too, and saw an outstanding horse in paddock, coat was fab etc. Checked price, it was 40/1, totally friendless; so I picked others that weren’t such a price………
yep, the 40/1 hosed in!! Doh, won’t be making that mistake again, he was the pick of paddock for sure.

Hi Maureen,
Where do I get my stats from?
Used to get them from Irish racing website, but seemed to have stopped.
However I found racecaller now on the Sun racing forum (Racing Chat)
http://sun.racecaller.com/forum/index.php
Upcoming races. Hope it’s helpful

Here for the first time is my dosage explanation in layman’s term.
If you go to the PEDIGREE ENQUIRE site and key in NICHE MARKET, careful of spelling and where necessary check parentage you will see a chart of his pedigree going back 5 generations. For dosage we only need to look at the first 4. You will also notice along the top just after his name DP=1-2-3-4-2 (DP) DI= 0.60 CD= -0.33 but what does it mean and how do we get it?
The figures 1-2-3-4-2 are Niche Market’s dosage make-up figure and from left to right are called Brilliant, Intermediate, Classic, Solid and Professional, the other 3 figure are made up from these 5.
How do we get these 5 figures?
If we look at the first 15 sires of an animal we might see some letters in square brackets these correspond to the initial letter of the 5 make up numbers above.
So in Niche market’s case the 15 sires are:
1 Presenting (1st generation)
2 Mtoto (2nd generation)
3 Jurado (2nd generation)
4 Busted (3rd generation)
5 Persian Bold (3rd generation)
6 Alleged (3rd generation)
7 Le Prince (3rd generstion)
8 Crepello (4th generation)
9 Mincio (4th generation)
10 Bold Lad (4th generation)
11 Riverman (4th generation)
12 Hoist The Flag (4th generation)
13 L’Enjoleur (4th generation)
14 Prince Bio (4th generation)
15 Artist Son (4th generation)
The letters tell you which part of the make up figures get the points and the position in terms of which generation tells you how many to award.
1st Generation gets 16 points
2nd Generation gets 8 points
3rd Generation gets 4 points
4th Generation gets 2 points
If the are more than 1 letter for a sire then its split evenly between the two letters.
To show you what I mean let’s just work through Niche Market’s pedigree.
Busted is a 3rd generation so is awarded 4 points. His letter is S so 4 points to Solid.
Crepello is a 4th generation so is awarded 2 points. His letter is P so 2 points to Professional.
Riverman is a 4th generation so is awarded 2 points. His letters are I & C so that’s 1 point each to Intermediate & Classic.
Hoist The Flag is a 4th generation so is awarded 2 points. His letters are B & I so that’s 1 point each to Brilliant & Intermediate.
Prince Bio is a 4th generation so is awarded 2 points. His letter is C so that’s 2 points to Classic.
The other sires have no letters so score no points.
So looking at this we get
Brilliant 1
Intermediate 2
Classic 3
Solid 4
Professional 2
The figure after these first five is simply the product of these five. The higher the figure the more influence these special sires have. It will always be an even number between 0 and 64 and is called the Dosage Profile (DP)
The sixth figure is the Dosage Index (DI) and is got by adding up the speed side (Brilliant+Intermediate+50% of Classic) and adding up the stamina side (50% Classic+Solid+Professional) Then dividing the speed figure by the stamina figure.
0.60 shows more stamina than speed.
The last figure is Centre Of Distribution (CD)
Here on the speed side we double the Brilliant Points and add the Intermediate, while on the Stamina side we double the Professional points and add on the solid.
Then we subtract the stamina answer from the speed answer and finally divide the whole lot by the dosage profile. The answer will usually lie between +2.00 and -2.00
A negative number will show the animal breed to stay long distances, positive the opposite.
Both DI and CD are written to 2 decimal places unless the answer is inifinity which is caused generally by no points in DP and is ignored because it’s dosage weak.

Early thoughts Jackie:
Brough Academy
Rateable Value
Clever Dick
Sir du Bearn
Mirific
Goring Two
#538
January 27th, 2012 00:39
I was on Goring Two lto, so he owes me speedy! Sir du Bearn will be good if odds aren’t too silly. Nicholls often sends his new recruits chasing at Fontwell, usually sucessful too.
I notice there’s money for Mirific too. Many thanks for your thoughts
#539
January 27th, 2012 00:39
Shame R Johnson isn’t there, he rides Fontwell really well.

#541
January 27th, 2012 09:25
Well it’s a bitter morning, but bright, fingers crossed it doesn’t rain any more. I have my lists ready, but I will trust my instincts when I see the horses in the paddock too.
Not leaving for a bit, so will pop back before I go. Sir Du .. is 2/5 at mo, not a price I can capitalise on.
Big move for Merific 7/4 fav now, I like Time Book and Amirico too.

January 27th, 2012 10:10
Morning all
Interesting race today in the 310 at Huntington benny be good at 7/1! Carrying bags of weight but in november beat syncronised, knockara beau , reindeer dippin to name a few and narrowly lost to dynaste. Only downside is a tendency to get 2nd so an ew bet looks good value.
Of the outsiders Dorset square appeals

January 27th, 2012 15:52
Nice 2/1 winner in the 1st jackie. It was 6/1 in running on betfair!!Happy days

We’ll done Jackie, benny be good missed out on the place with fourth

January 27th, 2012 21:22
Had a fab day, ended up quite a bit, for me
Had the first at 2/1, I left Nicholls, but actually ended up a price I could have backed to make a fiver, but I didn’t, I had Nagpur at 7/2, he opened at 11/2, but I went and saw the runners, he was the paddock pick again, he looked really good and hosed in even with top weight!
Then I was on Goring Two at 4/5 who had let me down lto, but came good, then I was n the German horse in the last at 9/4, he ended much shorter, with one ew, not placed. Again he was looking fine in the paddock.
So covered my fare, with a nice profit too

A good run from Little Josh will throw him into the National betting, I think. 1833 sounds like a proper staying chaser; National horse of the future, perhaps?
#556
January 28th, 2012 09:57
1833′s breeding is exceptional for a GN horse. Deffo one for next year or 2014.
#557
January 28th, 2012 11:27
Not in till later now, but first thanks to Showlad, BB prediction came good! Also popped a couple of grains on at 6/1 for her to win.
Very nice return from the 6/4 too.

1.15 Donny Alasi (not to U again!)
3.25 Donny Gullinbursti

A little challenge should anyone choose to accept it. The 2:45 and 3:20 at Leopardstown look like needle in the haystack jobs.
I challenge you to put a £1 e/w double on those races and see who (if anyone!) gets most profit
I will start with:
2:45 Staying Article (12/1)
3:20 Stephanie Kate (7/1)
#560
January 28th, 2012 13:30
speedy on stephanie kate 8/1 anyway and like what a charm 14/1
#561
January 28th, 2012 13:36
Hi all
Skybet:
QIANSHAN LEADER
GALAXY ROCK
CALAGRAY BAY
..and just in case he FINALLY takes his FINAL chance to make his dream come true by getting his OR high enough to get in and subsequently win the GN spread your loose cahnge on MERGIGO – in crap form but normal at in ‘lead-up’ races but has won at Donc before, is on a dangerously low weight and can get nearly 20/1 place (4 places) and nearly 200/1 the win on betfair
#562
January 28th, 2012 13:42
grumeti to win and hollow tree 6/1 ew in the first
#563

Got to love it though
#580
January 28th, 2012 16:01

January 28th, 2012 16:48
Just when I thought big bucks could be in trouble, the afterburners fire up and goodbye Dynaste!
Why of why does NP think big bucks will fail eventually, save those £2′s as they will add up!!!
#605
January 28th, 2012 16:52
Hope he doesn’t fail at Cheltenham. Quite pleased with my Big Buck’s & Quevega double. Quevega is strange – never races but then hacks up at Cheltenham! More competition this year though

Well done all winners today
#613
January 28th, 2012 18:07
Not sure you’ll get a place for 4th Showlad because of the non-runner?
#614
January 28th, 2012 19:30
Hi Speedy
Ye got 4th place – as I had bet on betfair. Betfair don’t reduce place market places as set out originally (unless severely reduced to an undoabLe scale), so ye got my 4th on Galaxy
#615
January 28th, 2012 19:33
Jacks you’re welcome re BB winning tip – glas you went on her in winner market too

Just saw that Kangaroo Court won today. Followed that horse over a cliff for two seasons and then forgot about him; till I just looked at the racing results.
#619
January 28th, 2012 20:46
Does anyone think that Unaccompanied could beat The Fly tomorrow?
#620
January 28th, 2012 20:56
I think he could do if Hurricane isn’t fully wound up. But I wouldn’t put money on it.
Looking forward to seeing Sea of Thunder in the 3:05
#621
January 28th, 2012 21:03
Mares allowance, plus the fact that she’s very fast. Also on the bit of paper on my wall where, one year I wrote Snoopy Loopy when he beat all the big guns…..
#622
January 28th, 2012 23:07
I’m thinking the same as you Maureen, HF just may not be 100% ready, she travelled very well lto.
kangaroo Court flew at the end to win, replay is on ATR site if you want to catch it Maureen.
#623
January 28th, 2012 23:09
WD on your footie Speedy, I have given up on my footie bets, haven’t had a 4/5 team accum up all season, so gave up!!
#624
January 29th, 2012 00:12
Thanks Jackie. The footie accas this season when I’ve tried to study the form have been diabolical.
So, every weekend I always do a £5 treble on Everton, Brighton, Crawley. Has not produced the goods this season (mainly due to Everton) but today it did, at very good odds!
#625
January 29th, 2012 11:18
Crikey; hadn’t realised it was a flat race KC won. Trainer always said the key to him was good ground, but never thought that would mean fibresand [or whatever it was!].
#626
January 29th, 2012 11:43
Going in Ireland now soft. Maybe things are looking favourable for Thousand Stars? Amazes me that their ‘Champion Hurdle’ has so few runners.

wonder what price I coulda got for Djok and Azerenka being world no.1s a few yrs ago, I did think it might happen.
Bizarre how the Federer era, now looking slightly (only slightly) like a horse race where the front 2, so busy taking each other on, they cut each others throats (so to speak) and another good sort flies on past!
Feeling sorry for Rafa, he has to be brilliant as he ever was, his whole career has seen him up there working so hard. I even feel sorry for Murray with these three to contend with, but I’m sorry Murray ‘ you are the weekest link goodbye’

God- Rafa has unbelievable strength, mentally he is spot on, such spanish grit!
I still think Djok will win, as his game is so good now. Mentally though Nadal has it, thats why he’s taken it to five sets….. watch and learn (weep) Andy

What a fabulous game it is, such unbelievable shots! 5th set, come on Raffa! (I do think Djok game is stronger though, but I agree Raffa can have the mental edge.)

glad someone else is watching
Obviously since the end of the 4th set, Djok has had it physically, needs a miracle suddenly,… or Nadal to start missing!!!!! more twists! what a match.
Djok should have put in extra effort to finish it in the 4th easy to say. Even if Djok looses this match I think players will still see him as no.1, he has played so much tennis here.

Although Hurricane fly is a classy sort, been off the track for a while so at short odds i will leave alone and go for Unaccompanied at 4/1 holds value for me.
Will it be rafa , will it be Novak? Either way I can see this going for a far while

Hurricane now odds on for Champion Hurdle.
Hope they are not tempted to put Unaccompanied in Mares Hurdle now, as that would be a danger to my Quevega/Big Buck’s double!

Prince Blackthorn 4-00 Ayr looked like it would win last week, but its stamina ran out so step back to the minimum trip should suit.5/2 looks a fair price and its evens on betfair to be placed. Good luck

Good luck Irish Raider.
I’ve avoided the jumps (which is unusual for me) and have had a go at Wolverhampton. I don’t like all weather but this is my lucky course for punting purposes. An extraodinary record over the last couple of years. Unlike Kempton, where I can’t pick a winner for toffee! I have now put the curse on this bet and it is doomed to failure!
Does anyone else have a lucky betting course?
Anyway, my Win Lucky 31 is as follows. Have covered it with a small e/w acca in case they all place. Have placed it early to take advantage of Bet365 (my favourite bookie) best odds guaranteed. Run the risk of non-runners and rule 4 deductions but c’est la vie:
2:50 Black Iceman (5/2)
3:20 Ad Vitam (8/1)
3:50 Standpoint (5/1)
4:20 Leyte Gulf (3/1)
4:50 Miss Cato (3/1)
Standpoint’s record in class 4 races is a big worry (0/25!) but this is such a weak class 4 that I am hoping he gets off the mark…
