Horses to follow in the 2016/17 National Hunt Season

The wealth of knowledge our contributors on Grand National Blog make it the number one source of statistics and analysis for anyone who is serious about trying to back the winner of the world’s greatest race.

The National Hunt season is starting to wind itself now up as the nights start to draw in and this weekend’s meeting at Chepstow will definitely see an improvement in the quality of horses on view. With that in mind I thought it would be a good idea to tap in to our loyal band of Grand National experts and see if they can turn their hand to highlighting some horses to follow for the fledgling new season.

It would be great if our contributors could add a few (let’s say no more than five to begin with) horses they expect to show a profit in the months to follow. These can be anything from well bred bumper horses, to novices you expect to take high rank or even experienced horses who you feel are well handicapped.

I’ll update a list of any suggestions at the end of this thread for easy reference.

Why not let us know your horses to follow and the horse that returns the best level stakes profit from Saturday 8th Ocotber until Bet365 Gold Cup day will win a prize – more details on the prize to follow – so get adding your stable of winners for 2016/17.

It says 5 Irish Raider. ;)

  10. Irish Raider says:

Ok. My substitute if one of the others gets injured!

  11. Seven Towers says:

Steering away from the more obvious candidates

ACTINPIECES (if only Pam Sly stops being so intransigent with Gina Andrews. Absolute brute of a mare, the horse not the jockey!)
VINTAGE VINNIE (over three miles plus)
WHATDUHAVTOGET (looked a monster on debut)
THE TULLOW TANK (please get rid of O’Regan!)
CLOUDY DREAM (the North may have unearthed one)

  12. kj says:

    I’ll say it then Seven… Coneygree :D

  13. Seven Towers says:

No steeplechaser has passed him yet! Would love to see him have a crack at the Hennessy. It would be a tough ask but it would be brutal especially if Seeyouatmidnight turns up for it too!

  14. admin says:

Great stuff, thank you guys. I’ll do a combined list shortly. The prize will be £20 but this will need to be claimed via the payment system on our sister site OLBG.com. To be able to claim the prize you will need to be a member over there so if you haven’t signed up now then please do:

    Thanks

  15. Mister H says:

    Thistlecrack (obviously)

    2 less obvious to follow…..

Emma Lavelle’s ANDY KELLY (hopefully turning out at Newbury on 3 November)

Nicky Richard’s HESTER FLEMEN (had a bout of colic but back in work)

  16. Seven Towers says:

I couldn’t remember the name of the bumper horse last season that I was really impressed with but going through the entries for the weekend I saw him! Too late to put in my five but I genuinely think CAPITAINE could be top notch.

  17. Seven Towers says:

    SUMKINDOFKING.

  18. Seven Towers says:

There’s a few lines of interlinking form that is providing quite a few winners. They involve a few horses namely GOING FOR BROKE, MISTERTON, PHOBOPHILIAC and AINTREE MY DREAM. Anything that has run ok against these horses generally speaking is coming out and running well. Rocklander that won well at Chepstow yesterday for instance was stuffed out of sight by Phobophiliac. Just something to keep in mind.

  19. Kevski111 says:

Got my aces over eights running today!

  20. Lucky Vane says:

    Grand National Rules For Voting

1a Horses must be theatrically able to run in the National : Meaning on raceday they must be seven or older.
1b Horses must be on the official list (which can be found on Racing Post website or Sporting Life )

2 Only a maximum of six allowed, but if you’re struggling to find six then just put down what you have.

3 Your best horse will be your nap, it will score 6 points and anything else will decrease by 1 point until you used all your choices.

4 You can amend your list (if you want to ) but do it before the deadline of that round. You must also correct the table, or it can get messy.

5 If you find adding your votes to the table confusing and want someone else to do it, then the order you’re voting must be made crystal clear. If I’d was to do it, then I will assume the best will either be at the top, or the left (as you read it)

  21. Lucky Vane says:

Round One for Voting in 2017 Grand National starts here!

  22. mandie says:

    here we go again….

    6/ many clouds
    5/vicente
    4/the young master.

    sorry that’s it for now.

  23. Lucky Vane says:

    That’s okay Mandie. :D

  24. mandie says:

cheers LV and a very happy new year to you and anybody else on here.
it is quiet talk this time on the G.N up to now though.

  25. Lucky Vane says:

My selection are very tricky and could (must likely change) as more data becomes available.

Native River is my best selection, but connections could have other plans IE Gold Cup. 6 points
Caroles Destrier 5 points (Welsh National might have come too early after Hennessy)
Vieux Lion Rouge 4 points (Bechers Victory must put him on everyone’s short list)
Minella Rocco 3 points (Been running well in my opinion)
The Last Samuri 2 points (Yes, I wrote him off, after all last year’s National was the slowest in at least a decade. However his third to Vieux Lion Rouge does show improvement so might give him one more try. For now he meets my criteria)

    Table Now Reads

    6 Many Clouds

  30. Seven Towers says:

Nothing is jumping out just yet, so will go with the flow. I haven’t gone for Native River on the assumption he won’t run but he will be seven and you’d think he is still improving. If he remains on 163 you’d think he still has at least another 10lbs in him.

    6. DON POLI
    5. MANY CLOUDS
    4. EMPIRE OF DIRT

  32. PenguinKeeper says:

Looks tricky this year for a change!

6 points Gallant Oscar( going on same basis as last year, only one race will count as a trying one, travelling as well as any when unseated last year imo)
5 points The Young Master( v good mark considering Sandown win, a sighter at Aintree when jumped fine until tired( not fit?) late on, now my favourite from this stable over Carole’s who I bet a while back but think post henessey mark bit too stiff)
4 points Vicente( Nicholls says it’s his aim so looks fairly handicapped will get a nice weight, has won over 4 miles already, what’s not to like?(jumping small question mark maybe?))
3 points Many Clouds( If decent ground on day very hard to see out of top 6)
2 points Henri Parry Morgan( bit of leap of faith now, but Bowen loves Aintree fences for his horses and it’s defo well handicapped if it’s jumping can get sorted. I’ve bet it ages ago so maybe pocket talking!)
1 point Maggio ( will be off a nice weight, will be targeted at race and likes Aintree having won over regulation fences last year. Slight doubt he will like hustle and bustle of race but if he gets in a rhythm early could see him going well for a long way.)

This list subject to substantial overhaul!

Struggle with table update from ipad I’m afraid

& KJ for giving us your views on how you see the Grand National going. If many of you were undecided then the will be more chances to air your views as we get closer to the main event. While we’ve not had the winner recently we did get Oscar Time in 2011 very early so who knows this year. :D
