Cause of Causes. If the weights go up 4lbs will carry 11.2, 3lbs more than last year. However, last year he had 5 preps. This year if he runs in the CCC he will have 2 preps. Last year we saw OFA bust the LTO stat ( 84 days) a Will the LTO stat hold up this year? Will the preps stat be busted this year ? One winner in the last 26 with only 2 preps. I suppose what I am musing about is should we, am I, going to give preference to runners with more preps and the sweet spot on LTO figures.

Subject to qualifying by getting a top 4 finish, all roads lead to Aintree for this one…

  3. Pollyowls says:

Gold Cup the priority… GN only to be discussed after Cheltenham
Quote from Brian Elllison… “He’s rated 167 now so we knew he’d get top weight, although it’s been compressed a bit here. It’s what we expected. We’ll get the Gold Cup out of the way and then see what happens.
“After last year I’m not sure how I feel about it. He was off 149 then and so he should’ve had a hell of a chance, but one fell in front of him and he had to climb over the top of him.”

My booklet One Jump Ahead at the start of the season says they are NOT going for the National this year.

Further to this a comment in Racing Post by Connections says

    9Dec17 Aintree (25Hy, RPR 168)
Definitely Red’s jumping was electric, I’ve never seen a horse jump as well as him. He doesn’t like the tacky ground they had at Wetherby but that form has turned out well – Brian Ellison, trainer. If all goes well he’ll probably come back here for the Bowl in April. He’s been to Cheltenham twice and he didn’t seem to like it – Owner Phil Martin

  5. daniel edwards says:

I JUST KNOW definitely heading to Aintree, possibly after a run in the Grimthorpe

Guardian reporting he has been the subject of a huge amount of support post weights too. On Betfair he’s now 60 but was 140 pre weights.

  6. Mike N says:

I Just Know backed probably because Paul Kealy in the Racing Post picked it out.

  7. Corbiere says:

Blaklion to miss Gold Cup and go straight to GN.

  8. moreen says:

He’ll have to; will take him a while to recover from Saturday and even the GN might come too soon.

  9. majorattraction says:

Sizing Codelco, Colin Tizzard, stable tour, RFO, 20/02/2018. The horse has had a wind op since PU in the Beecher, the plan is Cheltenham then the GN, The Dutchman is also (bled Haydock) still on course for the GN.

  10. Corbiere says:

OO Seven going in Ultima then will .see how he stays and decide Topham or GN.

  11. Corbiere says:

Our Duke may, depending on how he get’s on in Gold Cup head to Fairyhouse to lug topweight in Irish GN, according to Sporting Life Racing page online.

  12. daniel edwards says:

    Missed Approach
    The Barrowman

  13. Lucky Vane2 says:

Looks like last on the card Poormans Hill can also be added to that list.

  14. sling-shot03 says:

I have done definitely red for the Cheltenham Gold cup.Folsom blue for the Irish Grand National and tiger roll for the Grand National in a £10 Trixie ew pays nearly 17 grand. If they all turn up well I think that is a great bet.

  15. moreen says:

Am I right in thinking that Cause of Causes was lame after his fall in the X Country? Sizing Codelco ran a blinder in his race with a loose shoe.

  16. Lucky Vane2 says:

Moreen, the vet reported Cause Of Causes was lame on his right fore.

My observations and thoughts at the time concerning Tiger Roll and Cause Of Causes

Both Tiger Roll and The Last Samuri looked to run a huge race there. (Need to check figures when they available). Bookies will make sure that both will shrink in price (IMHO :P ). Cause Of Causes might be pulled out, but technically qualifies for National. One small issue with Tiger Roll which I feel I must point out, (after all to back a horse is the individual decision but it helps to have the facts), Timeform give Tiger Roll their famous squiggle which means he’s temperamental but at the last Cross Country race won by Bless The Wings, I was keeping an eye on him and he was making headway. Then according to Racing Post he had his rhythm interrupted and that brought an end to his run.

    From Racing Post today

Tiger Roll will seek to add the Randox Health Grand National to his three Cheltenham Festival wins after Gordon Elliott reported the Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase winner to have emerged well from his latest success.
But stablemate Cause Of Causes, a 20-1 shot for the Aintree showpiece in which he finished second last year, was on Sunday reported to be “stiff and sore” after being pulled up in the same race as Tiger Roll on Wednesday.
Tiger Roll was one of eight festival winners for trainer Gordon Elliott, as Keith Donoghue steered the eight-year-old to victory over the unique cross country fences. The gelding was successful in the Triumph Hurdle in 2014 and the National Hunt Chase in 2017.
Elliott, who trained Silver Birch to win the National in 2007, said about the top-priced 25-1 chance for Aintree: “Tiger Roll has come out of Cheltenham well and the Grand National is the plan for him.”

The gap between Cheltenham and Aintree is four weeks this year and that gives horses more time to recover from their exertions in the Cotswolds – a recovery period Cause of Causes will appreciate.
The ten-year-old’s trainer said: “Cause Of Causes didn’t perform at Cheltenham and is stiff and sore. We’ll see how he recovers and Aintree is still the plan, if all is well with him.”
Cause Of Causes was bidding for a fourth consecutive Cheltenham Festival win six days ago, having won the cross-country event a year ago after his victories in the 2015 National Hunt Chase and the 2016 Kim Muir.
