Grand National 2017: The Final Countdown!

Another Cheltenham Festival has sadly come and gone but this does mean that 100% focus can now be given to the 2017 Grand National.

Gold Cup runner-up Minella Rocco has been bounced up to favourite for the big race and as a former winner of the four mile National Hunt Chase it’s easy to see why. Personally I would be more than slightly concerned about his rather hit and miss jumping but as he is trained by Jonjo O’Neill he is sure to prove a popular pick.

Currently challenging for favouritism is Haydock Grand National trial and Becher Chase winner Vieux Lion Rouge who finished an excellent seventh in the Grand National last year when just seven years old.

2016 Grand National runner-up The Last Samuri is also well fancied again but may find things more difficult this year with plenty more weight to carry.

Gordon Elliott was leading trainer at the recent Cheltenham Festival and has previously won the Grand National in 2007 with Silver Birch. Elliott still has seven horses entered in the 2017 Grand National including last year’s sixth placed runner Ucello Conti and three time Cheltenham Festival winner Cause Of Causes.

Last year’s winner Rule The World has, of course, been retired but his trainer Mouse Morris still has a couple of entries for this year in the shape of Rogue Angel and former Irish National winner Thunder And Roses.

Whatever Willie Mullins runs will be popular with the betting public and the master trainer will be keen to register another Grand National success as we have to go back to the great Hedgehunter in 2005 for the last time he won the race. Mullins currently has five horses still entered in the 2017 Grand National, including the Malcolm Denmark owned Pleasant Company.

The next forfeit stage for the 2017 Grand National is on the 21st March.

Please add your thoughts and tips for the big race to this thread.

    2011, 10 runners, 5th the best finish

  2. litefoot says:

It just clicked with me that the ’50% stake back’ offer ends at noon anyway, 2 hrs before they start to offer returns on sixth place, so that may be another thing that catches people out!

  3. daniel edwards says:

    2010 15 runners

Only 3 finished, but that included 2nd place

  4. litefoot says:

Thanks Seven Towers, just noticed :)

  5. Pollyowls says:

    Morning all..
RP confirmed that the Grand National Course was watered around Fences 13 & 14 last night
With no rain in the forecast, expect the same tonight & tomorrow…

  6. Showlad says:

Daniel thanks for your posts this season – really enoyable.

RE identifying the winner indeed we haven’t been great but as someone else pointed out all the close shaves etc that we have had. For me with all the twists, turns and unimaginables in the world’s greatest race the most important thing is that we get a good overall result eg if half of the finishing Top 6 were in our Team Top 6. We’ll see this year how we do lol…

Daniel your system – I am liking Saphir – I take it it is just the 27f stat that omits him from your winners short list?. What are your thoughts on Saphir?

  7. daniel edwards says:

So for those 5 years, the horses with a chase win percentage of under 20 percent have made up 30 percent of the runners

They have under performed in terms of first 4 places, in that there have only been 4 when there should be 6

BUT there have been 3 others to finish 5th

So in terms of top 5, they should have been producing 7 to 8 in the top 5 and that is what they have done (with 7)

  8. kj says:

so possibly a bit of cloud today, but not much 10% cover and full sun from there!
ventusky (or similar model) is pretty cool weather map by the way if you haven’t checked it out, have found it very accurate predicting damaging wind gusts down here!

  9. kj says:

Its also predicting 18 degrees by 5pm, hottest point in the day! ( and hottest day)
I thought that was the reasoning for putting it on so bloody late.

  10. daniel edwards says:

    Correct showlad

Whilst I picked my top 6 on my system SDR is my number one pick in ‘real life’

Looks like a stayer to me
    In good form
Still tonnes of scope for improvement
    Best form in the race
Weighted to beat More of That on the G C run
Find another horse in the race who could have got within 30 lengths in the GC. I can’t find one. Given the most he is giving to anybody is a stone, I think he is well weighted

  11. billymag says:

From usually reliable sources looks like Pendra out and Doctor Harper is in

  12. ESB says:

The question now is – will Gigginstown drop Roi Des Francs to let BTW in.

    My guess is not.

  13. Pollyowls says:

Confirmed Pendra is withdrawn, so Doctor Harper gets in… that’s the only change
Assuming the reserves are Bless The Wings, Knock House, Sambremot & Viva Steve… but this still to be confirmed

  14. daniel edwards says:

Yep hearing that too from a reliable source

New thread now open – please bring this thread to a close

  17. daveyboy says:

    Bet365 money backnoffer now live…

  18. Party Politics says:

Daniel – Bindaree won 3 from 15 chases before the National he won (20%), indeed 3 of his first 6.

  19. National Punter says:

Glad I waited on my bets, double odds with bet365
Have followed Vicente in the end as have to like his stats 51/1
    Cause of causes 25/1
Black lion 29/1 ( got 22/1 win only ap )
    Thunder and rises 51/1
Rouge angel 51/1 ( got 33/1 a while ago, does show so on the national isn’t worth it )
    Houblon des obeaux 67/1
    Gone all ew

  20. deansmith187 says:

    Hello all!

    Hope all are well

Has Showlad and/or The Rascal put up their selections this year? If so, please can someone repost? Always interested to follow these 2 knowledgeable chappies!

  21. moreen says:

Not sure what’s happened to rascal…..did he say he wouldn’t be back last year?

  22. Systemsman says:

Good luck everyone – surely this has to be the year!!

  23. simons6 says:

Around 12.30am Racing Post’s Naps table of Tipsters updates, 3 or 4 years ago Tonight I checked it and noticed Aurora’s Encore napped (Winner), was 100/1 with some bookies so got On….Just checked the Naps table now and Highland Lodge is prominent but already well backed by Moi, so have lumped on Double Shuffle 50/1 rigt now with SkyBet just pushed out…..So my final bets are Blaklion, Ucello Conti, Highland Lodge, Roi des Francs, Wonderful Charm, Bishops Road, O’Faolans Boy and Napped STEAMER Double Shuffle to win 50/1

  24. National Punter says:

Off to get ready for the yearly GN party. Thanks for everyone’s hard work and time the team got a winner, still undecided on picks and I have done all my bets!
Tough year, so hopping to turn a profit with a couple of places if the elusive winner isn’t backed by NP
