  Where’s Rhino vote? Which is included in these posts.

  Admin thanks for this thread and for the invite to open it

  Welcome All to what we fondly call the Grand National Top 6 Tipsters League or the shortly titled Grand National Top 6 Votes.

  I invented this for the blog and we can proudly say it is now in its 4th year of running

  The ultimate object is to see how close each of us can get when we post up our final Top 6 vote of each Grand National, that final vote usually being cast at the beginning of the week of the Great race.

  Until then the Top 6 vote is taken at various intervals – the first being this one – with a closing deadline by the the last stroke of the clock at the end on 2011.

  We then take new Top 6 votes at key points in the lead up to the big race – the next after this being when the weights are decalared for the Grand National 2012.

  The vote allows each of us to score our top fancy with 6 points, our 2nd string with 5 points right down to our 6th fancy with 1 point. The depth of each of our Top 6′s allows us also to see who our friends on the blog rate highly and also who they deem are in with a bit of a shout, signalled by those creeping in with 1 or 2 points in their respective votes.

  This first vote is great fun and is also crucial to us getting a picture with who, as our blog sees it, should be looked into at this early, formative stage of the Grand National picture. There may be surprises in some people’s lists – including a horse or two you may know nothing or little about and it’s great fun checking such horses out.

  As the various stages of the vote take place it’s captivating seeing how the final table from each stage of the vote changes to the next vote hled, right up until the final table emerges, and we hope, contains the key for The Grand National 2012.

  The record of the Grand National Top 6 Vote for our blog is nothing short of amazing – if we haven’t had the winner we’ve always had the majority of the Top 10 placings in the actual result right there in our very own table’s Top 10.

  Merry Xmas all!

  I thought I would add my pre Xmas thoughts as I am away between Xmas and New Year. Votes as follows:

  6 points – Junior
  5 points – Western Charmer
  4 points – Beautiful Sound
  3 points – The Midnight Club
  2 points – Shakalakaboomboom
  1 point – Oscar Time

  I have backed my top 2 already – Beautiful Sound is inexperienced but I think is very well handicapped and will win a good race this year and could be a threat if gets in to the National from a low weight. I think the Midnight Club ran well last year given the bad blunder early on knocked the stuffinf out of him and was hampered towards the end, and if is aimed for the race and gets a decent weight will have a chance.

  Will be awaiting the weights with interest, particularly to see what Don’t Push It and Oscar Time get given. Can’t be having West End Rocker (though I backed for the Becher) as I think the handicapper has him well in hand now.

  I’ll never forget the Big Fella (who was my top fancy last year) jumping the last with every chance and fading so badly – obviously can’t be having him this year but I’ll still put a couple of quid on for old times sake if he runs again…

  …and why not? The owner is crazy about the race and originally intended it for the horse before he started winning King Georges and Gold Cups, and may well realise that 2012 would be the best year for him to go to Aintree – he should still be improving, will be well-in in any case due to the compression of the weights, and shapes to improve with the step up in trip. He’s never looked like falling in his tussles with Kauto Star, which should prepare him for the sort of pace likely to be encountered in the National. Sure the intention is to run him at Cheltenham, but there is a nice 29 day break between the Gold Cup and the National this year. Sooner or later the Waley-Cohens will figure this all out, if they haven’t already…

  Fair enough, he certainly runs like he could stay a National trip. I cant see it being this year though.

  Round 2 of the Top 6 vote will open when the weights have been announced for the Grand National 2012 and will stay open for 1 week.

  No point in having Round 2 at the entries announced stage as the weights come out only 2 weeks later and all could change with your picks if given too much weight or a horse you dismissed as you thought would get killer weight is treated lightly.

  So round 2 when weights announced in mid-Feb (only 6 weeks away).

  Finish deadline for vote 1 is tonight at 11.59pm (and 59 seconds ha ha).

  Anyone who is away and was going to 3rd Jan deadline can of course post up by then.
  I will do an analysis on Round 1 of the Top 6 Vote shortly after Jan 3rd in case there are any late voters

  OK Round 1 here I come

  Round 1 is all about laying out your own intial set of 6 cards and looking over the collective Team’s deck in order to get the perfect hand come the week of the Grand National 2012.

  The main 3 comments and changes for me to make as we embark on this year’s Grand National Quest are:
  1 – Due to the compressed handicap I think the quality of horses is going to get better and better and thus the winning weight and OR are going to get higher and higher.
  2 – This can only be a good thing and I think this year we will see another progression to higher weighted, higher rated horses doing even better than in 2011.
  3 – The fence ammendments are too small or inconsequential to make any difference to the thrill and excitement – which is great for us punters; the main changes being safer jump-offs and landings – which is great for the horses; the main outcome being The Grand National 2012 will not be any EASIER but will be SAFER.

  My votes are based on all possible things as they stand at this stage and all will be much clearer when entries, intentions and weights are known in a few weeks. So it’s my Top 6 Jim as we know it – but we’ll know much more soon

  Showlad’s Round 1 Vote Top 6:

  OK gaining much merit but just missing the frame for the Showlad jury are: Midnight Club, Always Right, Alfa Beat and last year’s winner Ballabriggs.

  With those who made the coveted frame (lol) we begin with:

  1 points goes to…OSCAR TIME
  will possibly fare better than Ballabriggs with being 5lbs better off this time round, but HAD HIS BIG CHANCE last year and I fear he will probably place this and next year but not win. THE ew bet of the race though.

  2 points goes to…JUNIOR
  was ‘same pace’ or ‘no extra’ in his 2 other good showings before at Chelts before his amazing run in the Kim Muir. So he’s in the picture for me – but I’m not sure if he’s the best horse of the class of 2012 or if he’ll truly get the trip. No preps so far this year is a real bad one for me in the world’s greatest and longest marathon test.

  3 points goes to…CHICAGO GREY
  Brilliant run to win the Challenge Cup at Chelts over 32f and I think as a 7 year old it took too much out of him to run over 33f a month later at Ayr in the Scots National. Real class animal and could really be in there at the finish in 2012. 3 preps already this year

  4 points goes to MERIGO
  well this classic GN horse was 5th in our table at this stage last year and LITTLE IF ANYTHING has changed. Ridiculously lowly weighted by Phil last year (maybe thought his poor preps were deliberate) and let’s hope he gives him a chance this year at around 140.
  Desprately poor preps last year and just missed out on a short head to regain the Scots National crown which he forced to run in after not geeting into GN.
  3 PREPS ALREADY THIS YEAR and characteristically he hasn’t done much in them – mALL is sabed for the big marathon line up 09- won Eider 10-won Scottish National 11- 2nd Scottish National.
  IF he gets in could really land the big prize

  5 points goes to MIDNIGHT CHASE
  A TOTAL CLASS ACT who clobbered Junior in the Morson chase at Chelts last Nov by 9 lengths giving him 12lbs and will only give him 8lbs this time round. If he runs could be top weight and could easily be TOP DOG too.

  6 points goes to…SYNCHRONISED
  This TRULY BRILLIANT LITTLE HORSE is one of the best long distance chasers to emerge in MANY MANY years. His Welsh and Midlands National wins were superb and his 3rd to Minella Four Star (God Bless) in the renewal of the Midlands giving him over 2 stone reminded me of a gritty Red Rum.
  His grade 1 Lexus win this week on GOOD ground has elevated his GN chances a million% by him being TRULY able to win on a likely Aintree going of the usual of Good, Good to Soft. I thnk there’s a GOOD CHANCE he will line up with AP (Gold Cup or not – 29 day gap) and if he stays on his feet and has the luck he will be there in the finishing small pack at the very very end. Brilliant turn of foot and closing speed (Welsh and Lexus) – need I say anymore?
  I am not sticking my head in the sand and picking holes that can be found in any runner. OR formerly of 155 may now go up to 160 or so but that 5lbs extra will NOT stop this ‘lil wonder horse winning the Grand National 2012 I AM ON.

  The Midnight Club and Midnight Chase just miss out, as hard to split as last yr. Oscar likewise. Junior is also one to remain a concern.

  I’ve kept Sync on my list because I rate him and have ‘big up’d’ him since our first little ‘best bets’ list when he was 100/120-1.

  Maureen, Notre Pere was entered in this year’s Becher and the Welsh Grand National but didn’t run in either. His new trainer, Barry Potts, has said that they are aiming for the GN if the going is heavy – I hadn’t heard that he is retired, but I may have missed that.

  I do like Quiscover – young, but a touch of class, staying on well to be fourth in the Irish GN earlier this year. There has been a lot of money for him since his hurdle win this week (backed down to 44s at one stage). Also, JP may be looking for another string to his bow, since Synchronised’s Gold Cup prospects emerged this week.

  ESB;ii said on Barry Pott’s facebook page that, after his run at Navan he’d shown them that he’d had enough, and was going to Glenbrook Stud for a happy retirement. Having said that, State of Play was supposedly never going to race again after last years National so, never say never in racing! I do like Quiscover and feel my first ante post bet is looming, although I think 8 is perhaps a bit too young. Maybe more of an Irish National hope after last year. Oops; shouldn’t be hijacking this thread…

  Hi Showlad, to answer your question is ASM Neil. The answer is yes I am. The decision to change my blog name came after my late dad died. He died in early February but at the time things was building up in our quest for last year’s winner (Ballabriggs ) so left it until calmer times and requested Darren our Administrator to accept the change, which he did.

  I choose the name because my dad had backed Aldaniti and I had backed Spartan Missile, the one, two in the 1981 national. Bob had also beaten cancer, which I wish my dad could have done. I know they were different types of cancer.

  Lastly i made a vow when he was dieing to give blood, which I fulfilled earlier last month for the first time.

  Thanks Showlad.

  Been thinking of new ways of trying to find that grand national winner and through those “improvements” they thought of during the summer, I intend to study every mount’s record at 3 miles plus where it got fourth place or better. The results I hope will be in my future top 6.

  Here’s an interesting tit bit from the official figures (I’m not sure whether its just Grand Nationals or any race ran over the Grand National course) over half the field had gone by Becher’s Brook during the period 1990-2011 and fence 1,4 & 6 took the highest percentage of fallers (including fatals). Which had my heart in my mouth when Merchant Paddy fell at what would be the fourth fence in the Grand National, but lucky the was no casualities.

  Will be doing my dosage table for the grand national, but I’ve made a few alterations to it. The first is how I come to my “inner boundaries”. How I did it before was write down in numerical order the DI and CD and judge where to make my “inner boundaries”. Now I take the average of the DI and CD in my sample. Then I take the average of the two smaller groups.

  The second difference was I now include DP 8 as being dosage weak. I thought long and hard as to why Ben said 6 or less, and thought I start dosage strong on double figures (10). Crisp73 used a form of dosage before me and Ben arrived on the scene. Crisp has said it was somebody elses idea, but 10 seems a nice round number to start.

  Last I’ve added two extra categorys to my table. So now we’ve have:

  Extremely Positive, or Group 1
  Positive, or Group 2
  Slightly Positive, or Group 3
  Better Than Average, or Group 4
  Average, or Group 5
  Below Average, or Group 6
  Slightly Negative, or Group 7
  Negative, or Group 8

  Stage 1 of the Team’s Vote in the GRAND NATIONAL TOP 6 TIPSTERS LEAGUE makes for fascinating reading.

  I have removed the 4 highly thought of (and well voted for) sad withdrawals in Oscar Time, Beshabar, Don’t Push It and Poker De Sivola from the table. Also the probable out for the season in Skippers Brig has been removed.

  Vying for top spot are JUNIOR and WEST END ROCKER.

  However, both seem viewed at from very different towers, with Junior’s brilliant run at Cheltenham gathering many naps but fewer voters whereas Wst End seems to be seen as a worthy placer in this year’s Grand National but no-one (yet)on our GN blog sees him taking the Gold.

  In contrast the Team either appears to see that wonderful Cheltenham run as a pointer to glory for Junior or are not impressed enough to commit (yet).

  A marmmite choice for the Team is SYNCHRONISED – the team divided between those that don’t see top weight as being a deal breaker and those that do.

  He is joint 3rd place with the major promise of Scots National 3rd placer ALWAYS RIGHT who casts a wider net of support with 2 more voters.

  Closely behind these two is BALLABRIGGS bolstered by those who support his claims as the first horse since Red Rum to achieve the Grand National Double.

  Can I just add that a few are uncomfortable in giving a vote, fine that’s up to you but to make things easier just thought I remind a few of you some rules I thought of either last year or the year before.

  1 From now on each list of votes can only have what’s officially down to run.

  2 The reason to vote are entirely down to you and the order you choose.

  3 While 6 is preferred, it’s not necessary to give 6 you can give a list from 1 to 5 if you like. You’re strongest fancy would be your nap and have 6 points awarded by you to the table. Any other will decrease by 1 until you have no more selections.

  4 If you give less than 6 you can up to the deadline include any others you feel should be in your list.

  5 If you feel muddled in doing a table, then someone will try and update it ASAP. (Probably me )

  6 If you amend a list of votes please do it before the respected deadline and please alter the full table as well, so less chance of mistakes compiling.

  7 Any votes please make them clear esp if you want someone else to update table.

  I think that’s all!

  hey quite a few voters! which is nice
  but a few regulars missing including Minnehomma and Showlad!!?.. strange, blog post probs ? or totally haven’t realised times up, did anyone post reminders elsewhere… well, better late than never I say

  Maybe they’re just as confused as I am about this bit of a leftfield list from me, with a few leaping in.. and out. Can’t believe the ones I nudged out Sync and Deep P, and ones that never get in like Calgary … just wanted to pick one with less weight!!! its a weighty list, oh well, its a helpful exercise.

  All the Irish big guns are out in force this weekend, I see, so I really must have some ante post bets. Interesting to see that my 100/1 Gold Cup outsider, Magnanimity is running again. Made a terrible mistake last time but the jockey kept him going when well out of contention, so I figured he really wanted to get a blow into him. Think the Bobbyjo will clear a few things up, although wonder if it will be The Midnight Club’s National rather than his prep race? I suppose Mr M won’t be running all the horses he has entered?

  Do all the WER bods know anything re rain then??? Like Giles Cross…bit of rain…get on…typical Aintree ground (as in last few years) I couldnt be persuaded…sorry!

  Think everything I’m reading or hearing is a positive for West, Used two systems and his name comes up in both, plus had on The Couch verdict on Racing Post TV and he doesn’t fancy it. Given the couches approach to the race that can only be good.

  Now it’s a case of finding what to back as a back up.

  OK here goes – the final set of Votes in Round 2…

  Analysis of the final table I will do before the week is out.

  Vote 3 opens at the first GN 2012 forfeit announcement on February 28th and the Vote closes midnight on Sunday night, 4th March, where your vote must have been submitted by bar any compelling reasons resulting in you missing the deadline.

  Much change in my stage 2 vote due to non-entries, unlikely etries and of course the weights. Like all, this is an early work in progress and at each stage the picture and thus my vote will move to the finished article. Can’t be a**ed with the unlikely/’virtually no word at all re intentions’ runners so the likes of Midnight Chase and Prince De B are left out of my list for now. Junior not enough prep; fear West End won’t get trip (PU 3 attempts at 28f twice and 33f once); Midnight Club I really didn’t like Ruby’s damning words of how he didn’t like the fences/course last year.

  Rise in the weights of 9lbs and NO preps but this class act is a big horse and will carry the extra weight fine enough and (if Donald knows what he’s doing re preps) he CANNOT be discounted.

  Class act winner over 32f at Chelts and solely aimed at GN by a very shrewd trainer. Could be the big grey..er.dark horse of 2012. 5 preps already!!
